Process engineering is a diverse field, providing the core expertise needed in basic industries. Key skills such as design and modeling are central to the degree. The curriculum builds on thermodynamic, mass, momentum, and heat transfer phenomena, as well as mechanical, chemical, and physical unit processes. This comprehensive approach ensures flexibility and adaptability in expertise without narrowing future prospects to specialization in a single area.
Process engineering encompasses Finland’s largest industries: the metal, chemical and forest industries. Key themes in the degree include environmental sustainability, the sufficiency and efficient use of natural resources and energy, renewable materials, and the circular economy. A unique strength of process engineering at Oulu is the integration of chemical, automation, and environmental engineering.
There are four specialization paths in the Master’s Program: Automation engineering, bioproducts, chemical engineering and process metallurgy. Additionally, students in the Bachelor’s program can seamlessly transition into Mineral Resources and Sustainable Mining Master’s program.
The career opportunities as a Master of Science in Technology (Process Engineering) are virtually limitless. Graduates are equipped to improve existing technologies and create entirely new and groundbreaking solutions.
This is a field we’re proud to guide students into. Why? Because employment prospects in the industry are excellent, and we don’t need to make empty promises. Students enjoy outstanding summer job opportunities, and internships complement theoretical knowledge and are a vital part of the studies. Moreover, the Process Engineering Guild actively helps students build valuable networks during their studies. The guild works closely with the degree program, ensuring students can contribute to all development efforts.
Welcome to the cheerful and innovative community of process engineering students!

Process engineering studies are based on understanding phenomena and their management, making it highly versatile by nature. A key aspect of the program is also developing methodological expertise, which is necessary in work life regardless of the job. The skills acquired in process engineering education do not become outdated like many other competencies, as they are inherently innovative. There are always new areas to which the learned skills can be applied to.
Process engineering is a crucial field of engineering for the future, as it often deals with large-scale material and energy flows that have global significance. Many future challenges require entirely new products and processes, and the pressure to develop these is constantly increasing. In Finland, process engineering provides a strong foundation for our export industry, both through the products of process industries and the export of the technologies and services needed for these industries.
For students, process engineering offers the opportunity for an interesting career that begins during their studies. Internships required by the program are generally readily available, and the salaries offered for these internships are significantly higher compared to other fields. Employment prospects after graduation are also good, the first job is often found with the employer where the master’s thesis was completed – an employer who’s often already familiar with the employee from the internship period.
Graduates from the process engineering degree program typically start their career in industrial research, product development, design, or operational roles. Quite quickly, these roles often expand to include financial responsibilities and managerial or leadership tasks in addition to expert duties mentioned earlier. Graduates of the process engineering program have successfully found employment in a wide range of industries and in the public sector, and in recent years, a delightfully large number have also succeeded as entrepreneurs. Most employers operate internationally, offering excellent opportunities for building an international career.
