The curriculum builds on thermodynamic, mass, momentum, and heat transfer phenomena, as well as mechanical, chemical, and physical unit processes. Process engineering encompasses Finland’s largest industries: the metal, chemical and forest industries. Key themes in the degree include environmental sustainability, the sufficiency and efficient use of natural resources and energy, renewable materials, and the circular economy. A unique strength of process engineering at Oulu is the integration of chemical, automation, and environmental engineering.

There are four specialization paths in the Master’s Program: Automation engineering, bioproducts, chemical engineering and process metallurgy. Additionally, students in the Bachelor’s program can seamlessly transition into Mineral Resources and Sustainable Mining Master’s program.

Internships required by the program are generally readily available, and the salaries offered for these internships are significantly higher compared to other fields. Employment prospects after graduation are also good, the first job is often found with the employer where the master’s thesis was completed – an employer who’s often already familiar with the employee from the internship period.
